Variable shape cushion for vehicle seat

The vehicle seat is fitted with cushion inserts which can be inflated to different sizes. The actual size, or thickness, of a cushion insert is measured by having conducting plates (2,3) each side of the insert and connected to a measuring circuit for the electric capacity of the cushion insert. This capacity is directly related to the spacing of the plates. The capacitance is connected into an oscillating circuit which measures the resonant frequency and which derives the actual capacity from a programmed chart. The system is used to correctly set the various seat cushions to programmed settings for particular occupants.
