The rag pickers have a plurality of rotary barrels or drums provided with an endless succession of pegs on the periphery thereof, distributed in longitudinal strips or lags, of wood or metal, secured to the rotary frame of the barrel by means of screws. The pegs wear out and bend, since they also come into contact with metallic foreign bodies, it being possible for the pegs to be of planar or round type, provided with a tip (point). The lags are recovered once they have been detached from the barrel, and the most defective pegs are replaced or straightened. Using a sharpening machine, which includes a rotary vertical disc, the lag is advanced in the direction transverse to the bench (bed), either directly or supported on a guide carriage, the lag having an inclination corresponding to the angulation presented by the various parallel lines of pegs which it includes, depending on its type and manufacturer. Transverse passes are combined with linear, intermittent displacement of the lag or disc, the two faces of the edge being sharpened in this way. By subsequently rotating the lag through the angle corresponding to the other direction, the other two remaining faces are sharpened. The position of the lag in terms of height can also be adjusted. <IMAGE>
