The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for extracting and synthesizing an image which allows a user to synthesize an image like the image is actually taken in a corresponding background by extracting each background and object from two different images and combining the extracted object and background naturally. Two different images are images which have been previously stored in an image recording unit or are immediately taken by an image photographing unit, and object extraction is performed by using an image segmentation algorithm based on depth information. Also, an operation speed can be improved by enlarging or reducing a corresponding image before and after an image segmentation process for object extraction, and the accuracy of boundary extraction can be improved by performing real time error correction for a boundary of an extracted object.
