PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical band sawing machine capable of relatively returning a band saw blade to an original position without interfering with a workpiece and a cut piece when relatively returning the band saw blade after the workpiece is cut by the band saw blade, and a method of cutting the workpiece by the machine. SOLUTION: The vertical band sawing machine includes a workpiece clamping device for relatively moving the workpiece W in X-axis and Y-axis directions from the band saw blade 3 provided on the vertical band sawing machine 5. A clamp carriage 15 movable in the X-axis and Y-axis directions includes a plurality of the workpiece clamping devices 17 capable of conducting position adjustment in the X-axis direction and movable in the X-axis direction at the position adjustment position. In addition, the workpiece clamping device 17 includes a clamp base 19 capable of conducting position adjustment in the X-axis direction with respect to the clamp carriage 15 and capable of being fixed to the clamp carriage 15, and a clamp jaw 31 movable in the X-axis direction with respect to the clamp base 19.
