Embodiments include a method, apparatus, and computer readable medium for enhancing the data exchange between wireless client stations (STAs) and network access points (APs). When the STA "wakes" from a low-power standby state the STA causes a composite Power Save-poll (PS-poll) plus DATA message to be sent by uplink to the AP whereupon the AP may respond with an acknowledgement (ACK) or with downlink buffered data for the STA. The PS-poll and DATA message may comprise frame check sequence (FCS) fields in each message segment so that the segments (PS-poll and DATA) may be decoded separately to enhance reception robustness. If either of the PS-poll or DATA segments fails to be received the network allocation vectors (NAVs) of neighbouring nodes are set to either the duration of the PS 40 pl and DATA message or a predetermined value that is greater than or equal to the expected transmission duration.
