PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the drive method for a solid-state image pickup device where a high speed operation is attained by reducing the number of horizontal and vertical samples and an algorithm in a conventional signal processing is applicable. SOLUTION: Pixels of an odd number not smaller than 3 of a solid-state image pickup device are used as one block and signal charges of a prescribed pixel are thinned and transferred to transfer registers 4, 7, which sums the signal charges so that the center of gravity of a pixel (pixel center) is in matching with a center pixel of one block, and the mixed charges are transferred. Furthermore, three transfer electrodes CR1, CR2, CR3 per column of a vertical registers 1 are provided to one side of the vertical register 4 facing to the horizontal register 7, and the three transfer electrodes CR1, CR2, CR3 are made of one layer of three different gate electrode layers to configure a solid-state image pickup element consisting of the vertical registers 4 arranged periodically per three columns. The camera has a changeover function of selecting either a mode where mixed charges with signal charges added to a prescribed pixels of one block is outputted or a conventional image pickup mode.
