The purpose of the present invention is to provide a hydrocarbon reforming catalyst and a preparing method thereof. For the purpose, the present invention provides a hydrocarbon reforming catalyst including a nickel catalyst supported on nickel and magnesium oxide represented by the chemical formula (NixMg1-x)O, wherein 0.05<= x <= 0.90. Also, the present invention provides a method for preparing a hydrocarbon reforming catalyst comprising the steps of: mixing a nickel precursor solution and a magnesium precursor solution (step 1); forming a precipitate by adding a precipitant to the solution of the step 1 (step 2); producing an oxide support by drying and plasticizing the aqueous solution having the precipitate formed in the step 2 (step 3); and supporting a nickel catalyst on the oxide by thermal treatment for reducing the support produced in the step 4. The hydrocarbon reforming catalyst according to the present invention has catalytic activities thereof improved greatly by producing a composite catalyst having nickel particles precipitated evenly on the surface of the oxide of (NixMg1-x)O through thermal treatment for reduction after synthesizing the oxide of (NixMg1-x)O.
