Electronic tag device and method of communication using the same

An electronic tag device, for use in an electronic shelf label (ESL) system, includes a controller that transfers a data packet including an error detection or check code (eg. CRC) to a display. The display operates in slave mode. Data integrity is checked at the display, and in the event of an error, the display requests (using a NACK signal) that the data be retransmitted. The data may be retransmitted a predetermined number of times. The controller and display may communicate using a serial peripheral interface (SPI) bus.
