PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the sucking and exhausting operations of a working oil in association with a temp. rise in good performance and to prevent cavitation with a temp. compensating mechanism. SOLUTION: This hydraulic shock absorber 11 is composed of a cylinder 12, piston 13, piston rod 14, and temp. compensating mechanism 56 provided in a liquid supply passage 51 and exhaust passage 52 formed in a column 50 to support a reservoir tank 15. The liquid supply passage 51 is furnished with a check valve 53 which opens with a pressure drop in a cylinder chamber 23 and supplies the working oil in the reservoir tank 15 to the cylinder chamber 23. The liquid exhaust passage 52 is equipped with a relief valve 54 which opens with a pressure rise in the cylinder chamber 23 and exhausts the working oil in the chamber 23 to the reservoir tank 15 and an orifice 55 for restricting the flow rate of the exhausted working oil to below a specified level.
