A hinge, eg for a door, comprises a housing 1 pivotally connected to a fixture by a coupling which includes a linkage 4; a shuttle 7 is located in a bore 27 in the housing 1, the shuttle being moveable between first and second positions, corresponding to open and closed positions of the hinge. The shuttle 7 has an internal cavity filled with fluid and in which a non-moveable baffle 13 is located to divide the cavity into first and second chambers 16,17. A first passageway, which may include a one-way ball valve 21, communicates between the chambers 16,17 so that fluid may pass in one direction between the first and second chambers. A return passageway 15 communicates between the chambers, to provide a restricted flow of fluid between the second and first chambers during movement of the hinge from an open to a closed position. Additional passageways 18,19 may connect chambers 16,17 via an adjustable valve. Modifications with closing mechanisms and stop arrangements, eg figure 28, are disclosed. |
