PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic buffer to specify the position of a first stage piston rod based on the stroke position of a second stage piston rod, facilitate control of a damping force generated by a buffer, and have structure where a stoke amount of the whole of the buffer is not influenced by a volume change of oil due to a temperature change. SOLUTION: In a multistage hydraulic buffer, a second stage helical guide (g) is disposed in a first stage piston rod 5, a second stage piston 8 is rotationally and translationally inserted in a state to slide over the second stage helical guide (g). Further, a first stage helical guide G in a winding direction reverse to that of the second stage helical guide (g) is disposed in an inner cylinder 1 or a helical gear is situated between the inner peripheral surface of the inner cylinder 1 and the outer peripheral surface of a first stage piston 6. The first stage piston 6 is rotationally translationally inserted in a manner to slide over the first stage helical guide G or the helical gear, and rotation of the second stage piston rod 7 and the inner cylinder 1 are regulated for use.
