The aim of the invention is to prove more effective protection for automation systems having a plurality of modules. Said aim is achieved by a method for protecting a plurality of modules of an automation system against inspection by selecting a first module (12), automatically determining at least one second module (14) that carries out a data exchange with the first module (12), and protecting the first and the at least one second module (12, 14) by means of a protective device of the automation system, such that not all the data of the first module (12) and the second module (14) is visible. The invention further relates to such an automation system.
