摘要 An engine assembly 10 comprises an engine control unit 19, and internal combustion engine 12 having an exhaust 14. The engine assembly also includes a turbine 16 which is driven, in use by the exhaust. The engine 10 utilises an energy storage mechanism, typically a battery supplied via an electrical generator 18, to store energy recovered from the exhaust via the turbine 16. The engine control unit 19 is arranged to vary the rate at which energy is stored by the energy storage mechanism. The engine control unit 19 controls the recirculation of exhaust gases in an exhaust gas recirculation loop (140 see fig 2) by manipulating the back pressure of the engine 12 by varying the rate of storing energy in the energy storage mechanism. The invention uses turbo-compounding to increase fuel efficiency and is suitable for hybrid vehicles.
