PURPOSE: A portable terminal and an operation method thereof are provided to set an operation mode according to a service environment by providing various lock setting functions for protecting personal information. CONSTITUTION: A display unit(151) displays an execution screen corresponding to the execution of a specific function. A control unit(180) sets the execution screen as a lock state by selecting a lock function. The control unit sets the execution screen as a background state by selecting background lock set. When the execution screen is set as the lock state, the control unit displays an icon which indicates the lock state.
