PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cooling device for a projection type display device capable of cooling lamp, even in the case that a lamp driver fails to operate and the lamp is not put out. SOLUTION: This cooling device for the projection type display device is provided with a lamp drive circuit, a fan drive circuit for driving a fan for cooling and a photosensor for detecting the light emission state of the lamp and the fan is maintained in a rotation state, while the lamp is lit, by detecting light from the lamp by the photosensor and controlling the fan drive circuit.
