A liquid crystal display device is disclosed. The liquid crystal display device comprises: a first substrate; a second substrate facing the first substrate at a distance; a liquid crystal layer placed in between the first and the second substrates; a common electrode plate placed in between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer; and a pixel electrode with a pattern, which limits an opening, placed in between the common electrode and the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer comprises 1-50 wt% of achiral smectic liquid crystal and extra nematic liquid crystal.
