A control device of an internal combustion engine, comprising valve timing variation mechanisms (41, 42) capable of adjusting a valve overlap time period. An air flow meter (6) detects the amount of new intake air passing through an air intake passage (2) upstream of an air intake collector (2A). The air density of the air intake collector (2A) is calculated based on detection values of sensors (27, 30) for detecting the pressure and temperature inside the air intake collector (2A). A scavenging rate of scavenged air relative to the amount of intake air is estimated, the scavenged air being blown out from the intake passage to an exhaust passage during the valve overlap time period, and in high scavenging rate areas, the amount of new air in a cylinder is calculated based on the air density because the precision of calculating the amount of new air in the cylinder is reduced by the effect of scavenged air. In low scavenging rate areas, the amount of new air in the cylinder is calculated based on the amount of new intake air.
|
