This cutting insert (1) is provided with: a front cutting edge (5a) positioned at the line of intersection of an upper surface (2) and a front side surface (4a); and a pair of lateral cutting edges (5b) positioned at the line of intersection of the upper surface (2) and a pair of lateral side surfaces (4b). The upper surface (2) has: a front rake face (21a) that is contiguous with the front cutting edge (5a) and that is inclined more downwards with increasing separation from the front cutting edge (5a); a pair of primary protruding sections (22a) that, in a top view, are positioned separated from the front cutting edge (5a), the distance between the two decreasing with increasing separation from the front cutting edge (5a); and a pair of auxiliary protruding sections (22d) that, in a top view, are positioned at the pair of primary protruding sections (22a) to the side towards the neighboring lateral side surface (4b) of the pair of lateral side surfaces (4b). The pair of auxiliary protruding sections (22d) are positioned separated more from the front cutting edge (5a) than are the ends at the front cutting edge (5a) side of the pair of primary protruding sections (22a), and the peaks of the pair of auxiliary protruding sections (22d) are lower than the peaks of the pair of primary protruding sections (22a). |
