Provided are: a liquid crystal-polymer composite material suitable as a liquid crystal that enables high-speed response, more specifically a liquid crystal-polymer composite material that has a sufficiently broad temperature range in which an optically isotropic phase such as a blue phase, particularly blue phase III, can be exhibited; and a method for producing the liquid crystal-polymer composite material. A liquid crystal-polymer composite material characterized by comprising a nematic liquid crystal composition containing at least two achiral liquid crystalline compounds, at least one chiral compound and a polymer produced by polymerizing at least one polymerizable compound; a method for producing a liquid crystal-polymer composite material, characterized in that the polymerization of a polymerizable-compounds-containing liquid crystalline composition comprising a nematic liquid crystal composition containing at least two achiral liquid crystalline compounds, at least one chiral compound and at least one polymerizable compound is initiated at a temperature falling within a temperature range in which the polymerizable-compounds-containing liquid crystalline composition can exhibit blue phase III, thereby curing the polymerizable-compounds-containing liquid crystalline composition; and a liquid crystal optical element produced using the liquid crystal-polymer composite material. |
