POLYMERIZATION USING LATENT INITIATORS

The present invention relates to a novel and rapid initiating mechanism for the polymerization of (meth)acrylates by means of latent initiators based on thermally activatable N-heterocyclic carbene compounds, such as, more particularly, N-heterocyclic carbene-CO2, carbene-CS2 and/or carbene-metal compounds (NHCs). Molecular weights of 10 000 to more than 500 000 g/mol and narrow polydispersities can thus be achieved in the polymerization of MMA using the novel initiating mechanism. The polymerizations can be carried out either in bulk or in solution.
