Producing olefins and hydrogen by dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons with an oxidative catalyst regeneration, comprises contacting gaseous hydrocarbon with a catalyst comprising a carrier, which is applied on a highly dispersed vanadium oxide (VO x) and optionally highly dispersed colloidal chromium oxide, and contacting the catalyst for regeneration with an oxygen-containing gas flow. An independent claim is included for the catalyst for producing olefins and hydrogen by dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons.
