The method involves providing a battery module strand (120) with multiple battery modules (130,140) which are switched in series to the battery module strand. The battery modules are monitored for a methodical function during an operation of a traction drive system (10). The battery modules are bridged, when a technical error of one battery module is detected. The traction drive system is transferred into a transition position, in which an electric motor (70) is supplied and actuated by the switched battery modules of the battery module strand such that it does not generate torsional moment. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for controlling an electrical traction drive system; and (2) a battery system with a battery for a vehicle.
