The device has an armature shaft (17) and a power transmission device located on the armature shaft for power transmission. One of the armature shaft and the power transmission device is connected to a torsional damper to damp rotation of the power transmission device and/or the armature shaft. The power transmission device comprises planetary gears (31), a freewheel (33), a pinion (35) and/or a quiescent state (19). The torsional damper is formed between the armature shaft and the power transmission device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a starting device.
