<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the waste in time and labor for development, to surely obtain different measuring results on the basis of the presence of heavy metals contained in the preservative applied to wood, and to enhance the discrimination workability of wood by automatic discrimination. <P>SOLUTION: The principle of a sugar content meter or the like, used when the sugar content of vegetables and fruits is measured, that is, a principle for measuring the sugar content of vegetables and fruits in a non-destructive manner on the basis of the reflectivity of light emitted from a light source 32 is used to confirm the presence of the coating (the presence of heavy metals) of the preservative (containing heavy metals) applied to the wood 12. This method is developed, by finding out that heavy metals (CCA) react with near infrared rays with a wavelength of 850-950 nm, and that the reflectivity of near-infrared rays is changed.
