PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of an image forming apparatus, in which when toner is fixed to recording paper by a fixing unit, a lower roller, which rotates together with an upper roller while pressing the recording paper against the upper roller that heats and fixes an image forming face having a toner image formed thereon, increases in temperature by coming into contact with the upper roller and heats the face of the contact with the recording paper higher than necessary, and deterioration of print quality occurs. SOLUTION: In both-sided printing on a sheet of recording paper 15 or consecutive printing on one side of each sheet of recording paper 15, the image forming apparatus separates the lower roller 52 from the upper roller 51 or stops the rotation during a period of time that fixing does not take place between the first and second sides of recording paper 15 or between sheets of recording paper, one behind the other.
