The method involves opening and closing a connection between a pressure chamber (102) and an outlet passage (122). A compression part (108) i.e. pump piston, is driven by a cam shaft (110) and fuel is compressed in the pressure chamber. An intake control valve (104) is actuated by an actuator (116). Rotation speed of the cam shaft is directly or indirectly detected by a rotation sensor. A feed capacity of a high pressure pump (100) is monitored. A reference angle position of the cam shaft is determined depending on a change of the feed capacity during an iterative changed control of the valve. An independent claim is also included for a high pressure pump.
