The driver assistance system has a sensor (4,5), by which the distance is measured, where the sensor signal is evaluated by an evaluation unit, and the clearance height (2) is calculated. The sensor is arranged on the vehicle (1) such that the distance measurement is carried out in the vertical direction. A display unit is provided, by which an acoustic or optical warning message (6) is outputted when the vehicle approaches the obstacle (3) with insufficient clearance height.
