PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for efficiently operating an ARQ retransmisison timer of a MAC layer in a broadband wireless access communication system.

SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a transmission method of a Media Access Control (MAC) layer in a wireless communication system which is characterized in including the steps of determining whether a Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) ending signal is generated from a physical layer after a packet is transmitted; and driving an ARQ retransmission timer for the packet when the HARQ ending signal is sensed.
