A radio link controller (RLC) entity generates protocol data units (PDUs) for retransmission that may be of any size so long as a transport block has the capacity and size to carry the retransmitted RLC PDUs. By contrast, the size of RLC PDUs containing new data are restricted so as not to exceed a variable size limit for a transport block that is going to carry the PDUs, e.g. half the size. The invention makes retransmission possible without re-segmentation or any other modification to the original PDUs. The variable size limit may be changed to a different size limit in response to an indication from a receiving device, the different size limit being valid for a specified time period. The variable size limit may be based on an average size for transport blocks preceding the current transport block. The retransmission of data may conform to an automatic repeat request protocol. |
