<p>A bender which can be used to bend or fold sheet material of greater length than the length of the bender comprises an anvil 1 and a clamp bar 5 between which the sheet metal is clamped. A pressure plate 2 is pivotable about a longitudinal axis of the bender. The pressure plate is preferably connected to the anvil via end plates 4 connected to the anvil and having semi-circular bearing surfaces 7 which receive bearings (3, figure 2) of the pressure plate 2. Tie bars 6 may be pivotally connected at one end to the bearing element (3) and to the plate 4 at its other end by a sliding connection. When at their full extent the sliding tie bars prevent the bearing elements (3) rising from the bearing surfaces 7.
