<p>A battery pack (400, fig. 4) having a modular construction with multiple battery modules (200, fig. 4), each module having a sleeve (20, fig. 2A) enclosing a stack of cell blocks 100. Each cell block comprises first and second conductive end plates 12a/b and a plurality of cells 10. Each cell extends between the first and second end plates. The battery module may have rods extending through the end plates for maintaining rotational alignment of the cell blocks and a non-conductive gasket with holes through which the cells contact the end plates. Each cell block may have a temperature and/or voltage sensor and a respective associated sensor circuit. The sensor circuit may extend between a tab protruding from each of the two endplates of the cell. The cells may be cooled by a coolant pumped in between the cells, which are spaced apart; the sleeve may have an inlet and an outlet for the flow of the coolant. The battery pack may be used in a hybrid vehicle, and the plurality of cells may be stacked in series within the sleeve, wherein the sleeve closures slidably engage the ends of the sleeve.</p> |
