A method (12) for controlling the access to information in a social network (1) is suggested, wherein information will be accessible by different users (4, 5) based on a social distance value that is assigned to each user (4, 5), wherein the user (4) providing said information decides on a limiting social distance value, wherein users (5) having a lower social distance value have access to said information and wherein users (5) having a higher social distance value do not have access to said. In addition to this, the user (4) providing said information can modify the access permission individually on a user-by-user (5) basis.
