A method for efficiently expanding element files of a USIM(Universal Subscriber Identification Module) card in a mobile terminal is provided to expand element files effectively, used as phonebook or SMS(Short Message Service) storage spaces, in a USIM card, without using a special terminal memory. If a user attempts to store phonebook data in a specific element file of a USIM card(S1), the USIM card judges whether 253 phonebook data are stored in the element file(S2). If not, the USIM card stores the phonebook data in the empty space of the element file(S3). In case the element file is filled with 253 phonebook data, the USIM card outputs a "USIM memory full" message and asks the user whether to add a new element file(S4,S5). If the user selects "YES", the USIM card copies the header information of the existing element file and creates an additional element file having an ID different from the existing element file(S7). If the additional element file is successfully created, the USIM card stores the link information of the created element file in the last 254th record of the original element file(S8). Then the USIM card stores the phonebook data in the new element file(S9).
