The inerting method involves preparing an initial-gas mixture in a mixing chamber (6), which comprises oxygen, nitrogen and if required other components. A portion of oxygen is separated from the prepared initial-gas mixture in a gas separation system. A gas mixture concentrated with nitrogen is prepared at an outlet (4a.1,4a.2; 4a.3) of the gas separation system and is led into the room atmosphere of the enclosed room (2). An independent claim is also included for an inerting system for setting and holding the predetermined oxygen content in the room atmosphere of an enclosed room.
