The present invention relates to a symbol detection method for a MIMO system comprising: (a) a step of estimating channel environmental information and transmission mode information of a current reception signal from the signal currently received by a reception antenna (21); (b) a step of setting the size of a symbol searching space based on the channel environment information and the transmission mode information estimated in (a) the step; (c) a step of calculating the cost function of each symbol vector within a symbol searching space based on the size of the set symbol searching space set in (b) the step; and (d) a step of calculating a determination value using the cost function calculated in (c) the step. The present invention can reduce the calculation complexity of a determination value calculation step by controlling the size of the symbol searching space according to the channel environmental information such as the signal-to-noise ratio and a channel condition and a transmission mode information such as the antenna organization and conversion method of the signal received currently and using the symbol detection method of the MIMO system.
