摘要 <p>INVENTION TITLE:Method for Preserving and Conserving Fibrous Materials against deterioration caused by Acid, Insect Infestation, Oxidation and MoistureAPPLICANT: Parylene Holding Pte Ltd (Company Registration No. 200312141R) INVENTOR: Mr. Chang Yoke MunThis invention relates to a method for preserving and conserving fibrous materials against deterioration caused by acid, insect infestation, oxidation and moisture (Figure 2). The preservation and conservation method consists of receiving an incoming fibrous material from the customer, conducting checks to identify the fibrous material and performing surface cleaning to remove contaminants from the fibrous material; loading the cleaned fibrous material into a chamber and subject it to vacuum treatment. The chamber and the substrate fixture in it can be customized to contain multiple or bulk quantities of the fibrous material. The vacuum treatment eliminates insects and removes oxygen, moisture and acids from the fibrous material. This slows down the deterioration of the fibrous material significantly; applying a parylene film on every surface point of the fibrous material by subjecting the parylene dimer raw material to vaporization, pyrolysis and deposition procedures. The quantity and grade of raw material are precisely selected and measured for every specific fibrous material. The parylene film increases the tensile strength of the fibrous material and extends its life span against deterioration. The parylene film also gives the fibrous material barrier properties. These barrier properties make the fibrous material water-proof, chemically inert and un-reactive with oxygen, which stop deterioration (e.g. insects are unable to access and ingest the fibrous material) for a prolonged period of time ; trapping and disposing the residual waste from prior procedures through low-temperature condensation in an environmentally friendly manner, followed by unloading the treated fibrous material; and finally, the treated fibrous material is packaged and delivered according to customer requirements (i.e. the archivist's, librarian's and conservator's standards). The invention is enabled and supported by a deposition system and machine (Figure 1).</p>
