The unit has surface mounted components i.e. LEDs (2), arranged on a printed circuit board (1) according to a regular arrangement. A primary light diffraction layer (3) is made of a transparent or translucent material that comprises glass microspheres (4) and covers the printed circuit board and the LEDs. A finishing layer (5) masks the LEDs and homogeneously diffracts light. A surface of the printed circuit board carries the LEDs and is coated with a white reflective coating, and the LEDs are installed in linear chains, where power of the LEDS is 30-60 mega Watt. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a luminous unit.
