A method for processing operational data 30 of an industrial system12 comprises the steps of: gathering operational data 30 of the industrial system 12 with a control system 18 of the industrial system 12; encrypting the operational data 30 with a homomorphic encryption scheme in the control system 18; sending the encrypted operational data 32 to a data processing system 26 which is adapted to perform a data processing function on the encrypted operational data 32 to generate result data 34; receiving the result data 34 of the data processing function in the control system 18; and processing the result data 34 in the control system 18.
