A coaxial physical layer device for use in EPON over coaxial cable (EPOC) systems operates in at least two different modes: a discovery mode and a normal mode. In the discovery mode, a first orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) coaxial signal is received that has a preamble including a plurality of short training fields (STF) and at least one long training field (LTF). In the normal mode, a second OFDM coaxial signal is received that has a preamble including only a single short training field. The short training field is shorter than an OFDM symbol. Overhead reduction during active communication is thereby achieved while sufficient preamble size is provided during initialization, acquisition and synchronization (discovery mode).
|
