The invention relates to a method for producing an oriented liquid crystal layer, which includes applying a metal oxide layer to the surface of a substrate, forming a porous structure in said layer and subsequently applying a layer of liquid crystal. The present method makes it possible to produce an oriented liquid crystal layer with a given direction of orientation of the liquid crystal, inter alia a uniform planar orientation with a given direction.
