The present invention provides a probe and protective cover for a probe with which a light irradiation section is protected. A light guide plate (13) emits light toward a subject from a light-emitting surface. An ultrasonic vibrator (12) detects photoacoustic waves generated within the subject after emission of light toward the subject. A protective cover (14) comprises a light-transmitting protective member (15) covering the light-emitting surface of the light guide plate (13), and a brace (16) for supporting the protective member (15).
