In order to improve optical element characteristics, an optical element (polarization filter) provided with a substrate (1S) comprising a wire grid area (1A) and a peripheral area (2A) that is positioned on the outer periphery of the wire grid area (1A) is configured as follows: a wire grid is provided to the wire grid area (1A) of the substrate (1S), said wire grid comprising a plurality of linear wires (P10) that are made of Al, that extend in the y direction, and that are arranged with a space (S) therebetween in the x direction; and a pattern (repeating pattern) in which a plurality of protruding sections (P20) that are made from Al are arranged is provided to the peripheral area (2A). This pattern can be a checkerboard pattern, for example. The abovementioned configuration makes it possible to prevent deformation and defects in the wires (P10), and to arrange the edges of the plurality of wires (P10) so as to be spaced apart from the edges of the substrate (1S). In addition, the protruding sections (P20) in the peripheral area (2A) make it possible to prevent the intrusion of moisture into the wire grid area (1A).
