The present invention relates to an overvoltage protection circuit and a method for the same. The overvoltage protection circuit according to the present invention comprises a resistance divider, a reference voltage supply unit, a comparator, and an inverter, wherein the inverter consists of a series-parallel combination circuit of first to third semiconductor switching devices which receive the output of the comparator to be driven. As the first semiconductor switching device, the second semiconductor switching device, or the third semiconductor switching device receives the output of the comparator to be driven, the overvoltage protection circuit outputs, when an external voltage is within a voltage range required for the internal circuit, the external voltage, and allows, when the external voltage is greater voltage (overvoltage) than voltage required for the internal circuit, the external voltage to flow into the ground to set voltage supplied to the internal circuit to 0 (zero) V, thereby protecting the internal circuit from an external overvoltage. The overvoltage protection circuit is simply realized within an IC and controls overvoltage inputted from outside, thereby safely protecting the circuit from the overvoltage. |
