PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for accurately detecting an icing condition.SOLUTION: An apparatus includes a piezoelectric material 304 and a vibration detector 308. The piezoelectric material 304 has a surface proximate to a surface of a vehicle. The piezoelectric material 304 is configured to vibrate. The vibration detector 308 is configured to detect a change in vibrations in the piezoelectric material 304 that indicates a presence of an icing condition on the surface 318 of the piezoelectric material 304.
