PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a multilayer coating film without intermediate coating, by which a coating film with good smoothness and chipping resistance is formed. SOLUTION: The method for forming the multilayer coating film is provided, whereby after formation of an electrodeposition coating film on a steel plate, an aqueous first base coat coating material (X) contains 1-20 pts.mass of a flat pigment (a) based on 100 pts.mass of the resin solid content in the aqueous first base coat coating material (X), an aqueous second base coat coating material (Y) contains 10-20 pts.mass of a flat pigment (a1) having a particle size ranging from 1-10 μm as determined by particle size distribution based on volume and the particle content ranging from 70 to 100% based on the 100 pts.mass of the resin solid content in the aqueous second base coat coating material (Y), and a clear coat coating material (Z) contains a hydroxyl group-containing acrylic resin (z-1) and a polyisocyanate compound (z-2).
