A self righting cleaning appliance of the cylinder type comprises a cyclonic separating apparatus 4 for separating dirt from a dirt-bearing fluid flow and a floor engaging rolling assembly 6. The cleaning appliance is arranged so that it is urged to return to an upright position if it is tipped onto its side, this may be accomplished by the positioning of the centre of gravity. The floor engaging rolling assembly 6 preferably includes a main body with a recess and a plurality of floor engaging wheels 10 with the separating apparatus 4 being received in the recess. The rolling assembly 6 is preferably spheroid or spherical in shape and the cyclonic separating apparatus 4 is preferably a multiple stage arrangement with a first single cyclonic stage and a second cyclonic stage formed by a plurality of cyclones in parallel.
