PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device in which white balance can be adjusted.SOLUTION: An illumination device 2 includes: a light source that emits first light of a first wavelength range; a retardation plate 26 where the first light enters; a phosphor layer 32 that is excited by a part of the first light transmitted through the retardation plate and generates second light of a second wavelength range different from the first wavelength range; a reflection element that reflects the second light generated by the phosphor layer to enter the retardation plate; a reflection portion that reflects the other part of the first light transmitted through the retardation plate to enter the retardation plate; a polarization separation element 50A that is provided in an optical path between the light source and the retardation plate, has polarization separation function to the light of the first wavelength range, and transmits or reflects the second light; and a rotation mechanism that rotates an optical axis of the retardation plate.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2 |
