Improvements in and relating to the evaporation of salt, sugar and other solutions and to the generation of steam

Separate heater and evaporator apparatus.-In an apparatus for evaporating salt, sugar &c. solutions and consisting of a preliminary heater and a separating vessel, a liquid column being maintained above the heater of such a height that the formation of steam bubbles takes place above the heater, the liquid circulation being effected without pumps, the separating vessel is surrounded by, or contains a compartment in which the heated liquid rises and forms the liquid column, the walls of the compartment extend above the normal level of the liquid in the separator and the cross sectional area of the compartment does not exceed the area of the liquid flow through the heater; the evaporating solution is ejected by ebullition over the walls of the compartment into the separator. Solution introduced into the apparatus through a pipe 12, Fig. 3 descends through an inner chamber 13 and. pipe 9 to the bottom portion of the apparatus, then rises through the tubes 8 of a steam heater and flows past the outside of the chamber 13 until it is deflected by a roof shaped member 19 into the top of the chamber 13. The pressure of the liquid above the heater prevents evaporation until the liquid has passed out therefrom and the steam when produced escapes bv the outlet 5. In other forms, heaters using liquid or solid fuel are utilized or the pipe 9 is arranged outside the apparatus; or an annular passage mav be provided between the walls of the heater and the outside wall of the apparatus and the liquid flow down this passage before rising through the heater, the use of an inner chamber 13 being dispensed with if desired. As applied to a " wagon-shaped " evaporator, the beating tubes are arranged horizontally and a single partition divides off the chamber 13, the partition extending up one side and around the top beyond the steam outlet which is arranged to pass through it into the chamber 13. Fig. 11 shows an evaporator comprising a heater 29 and separator 1 housed in different vessels; the vertical separator may be replaced by a horizontal one. the inlet pipe of which reaches above the level of the liquid and the outlet pipe. More than one separator mav be used with one heater and vice versa, but the cross-sectional area of the pipe conveying the steam and liquid mixture to the separators must not exceed that of the passages through the heater.
