A method of controlling the output pressure of a mains water pumping station 6 which pumps water to a main supply conduit 12 is claimed, wherein the main supply conduit feeds a plurality of district metering areas (DMAs) 14, 16, 18. The pressure requirements of all of the DMAs is met, but the pressure is not unnecessarily high. Each area has a critical point 26, 30, 34 at which the value of the water pressure is deemed to be the least acceptable compared with other values at other points in the same DMA. The method comprises monitoring water pressure in respect of each DMA, and using the monitoring data to establish control data governing the water pressure such that the pressure of the water that is supplied into the main supply conduit is controlled to ensure that there can be maintained at the critical point within each DMA a respective acceptable value for the water pressure. A system for processing water comprising a controller 36 is also claimed, wherein the controller has a flow rate input and a control output for adjusting the pressure of water which is supplied into the main supply conduit. |
