<p>600,286. Measuring forces on lathe &c. cutting-tools. HUGHES, A. T. July 30, 1945, No. 19450. [Class 106 (ii)] Means for measuring forces exerted in various directions on lathe &c. cutting-tools comprises a tool holder mounted in a ball-and-socket or like joint or, as shown, a partly spherical tool holder 6 mounted in partly spherical seatings 8, the holder being mounted in a rigid housing 7, a static pressure indicating-device 1, 1a serving to indicate the backward thrust on the tool 5 having one portion 1a forming part of the ball &c. joint, and a plurality of other static pressure indicating-devices co-operating with seatings in the holder 6 and the housing 7 for measuring torque and side and tangential forces on the tool. To measure the tangential force, a ball contact 13 on the part 2a of a static pressure indicating-device 2, 2a contacts an inclined face on the holder 6, and similar arrangements measure the side pressure and torque. Means, such as a screw-threaded plug or the like, interposed between the housing and holder is provided whereby each indicating- device can be pre-loaded. Each indicating- device may be as described in Specification 398,687.</p> |
